Hi my lovelies, I wanted to show you my Formula 1 themed cupcake ideas. I made these last month for my nephew. I can’t believe he’s now 16! I’ve made him many birthday cakes over the years, most of them being car themed. Anyhow, I thought I would give you a little insight into how I decorated them.

So all of the toppers are based on white discs. I made these from my favourite white Renshaw Flower and Modelling Paste. I cut them out the night before I wanted to decorate them, as I wanted the discs to dry hard so I could handle them easier.

You may recognise the helmet and traffic lights as I have made these before on other cakes. I actually have written tutorials for those, as well as a video tutorial for the helmet. Links to those tutorials below, if you would like to take a look.

Happy Birthday Cupcake Topper

Happy birthday cupcake

So now for my new toy! I made the Happy Birthday cake topper using an Outboss expressions stamp by Sweet Stamp. I’ve been wanting to get one for ages, so I decided to treat myself and I love it! They have lots of different ones, if you would like to take a look at them click here. You will also find a photo tutorial of how to use them there too. I used white modelling paste to make the topper and left it to dry overnight.

Once it was dry I painted the Happy Birthday red using my Sweet Sticks water activated paint.

The palette above is called ‘Monster’. You just add a few drops of water to the colour you want to use and wait a few seconds for it to activate. I find the paint really easy to use. Sometimes I need to apply two coats, but it does give a good coverage. For the Happy Birthday topper I applied two coats as I wanted the red to really pop! You do need to let the paint dry between coats. When it was painted, it reminded me of the Cola logo!

How I Created The Letters, Numbers and Trophy Topper

The letters and numbers were cut out using FMM’s alphabet and numbers tappit set. I also used the ‘Get Sporty’ set to cut out the trophy. I again use Renshaw Flower and Modelling Paste to cut out my shapes from the tappits. You need to use modelling paste as sugarpaste/fondant on its own won’t work, as it isn’t strong enough. FMM have lots of YouTube tutorials showing you how to use the tappits. They are worth taking a look at. Once you’ve mastered the technique, they create really professional results. I will leave links below to the products I used and you will also find the tutorials there too. Once cut out, I left them to dry overnight and then painted them silver.

Other Edibles Used

Here’s a tip on how to make your own modelling paste from normal sugarpaste. I actually made the red and black modelling paste that I used to make these toppers. To do this, I used normal red and black sugarpaste (ready to roll fondant) and added a tiny amount of CMC powder. I find this a cost effective way of making modelling paste, if I don’t need much of a particular colour. Personally, I don’t think it’s as strong as ready bought modelling paste, but it certainly does the trick for small features and worked perfectly for me here. I always have CMC powder in the cupboard for such occasions! You just work a little into the sugarpaste and you will feel it strengthening up as you knead.
