Hey everyone, what do you think of these horse themed cupcakes I made for my daughter? It’s so crazy that I officially now have a nine year old! Our social distancing celebrations went on for a few days so she could celebrate with all the members of our family.
I thought I would show you how to make some of these horse themed cupcake toppers. If you wanted to make the rosette cake topper, I have a tutorial for this in another post, which you can find here. The cake topper tutorials below are for the riding hat, the horseshoe, the carrot and the apple. There are also video tutorials of some of the toppers too.
I’ve included a list of what materials are needed for each cake topper. I always try to use as few items as possible in my tutorials and offer alternatives when I can. You can find more about the tools I use on my tools page. At the bottom of this page I have also included a list to the items that I use in these tutorials.
How To Make A Riding Hat Cupcake Topper
For the riding hat cake topper you will need
- Black modelling paste
- Edible glue or vodka
- Small circle cutter
- Knife
- Blade and shell modelling tool or something similar

Take a piece of black modelling paste and mould it into an oval shape.

Using your blade tool emboss a cross over the top of the oval shape.

Roll out a piece of black modelling paste and use a small circle cutter to cut out a circle.

Cut the circle in half.

Glue the semi circle under the oval shaped piece as in the above image. This forms the peak of the hat.

Roll a small piece of black modelling paste into a ball and stick to the top of the hat.

Roll a small piece of black modelling paste into a thin tube.

Shape the tube into a rounded V shape.

Glue the V shape under the hat as in the image above.
How To Make A Horseshoe Cupcake Topper
For the horseshoe cake topper you will need
- Grey modelling paste
- Knife
- Blade and shell modelling tool
- Small round piping tip
- Edible silver paint (only if you want to paint your horseshoe)

Roll out some grey modelling paste into a long oblong shape.

Trim and cut the modelling paste into strips.

Curve the strips to make a horseshoe shape. Trim the ends with a knife if needed.

Using the small end of a piping nozzle emboss nail marks on the horseshoe. Be careful not to go all the way through the modelling paste.

You may need to neaten off the sides of the horseshoe if they have been distorted by the piping nozzle.

Leave the horseshoe to dry for a few hours and then paint it silver with some edible paint.
How To Make A Carrot Cupcake Topper
To make the carrot cake topper you will need
- Orange modelling paste
- Green modelling paste
- Yellow sugarpaste
- Blade and shell modelling tool
- Small calyx cutter

Mould a piece of orange modelling paste into a long cone shape.

Using a blade tool, gently emboss some random lines into your cone shape.

Using a ball tool, or the blunt end of a skewer gently push a hole into the larger end.

Roll out some green modelling paste and use a small calyx cutter to cut out your shape. Stick it on the larger end of your carrot.

Create a small hole in the middle of your green leaves. This should make your leaves stand up slightly.

Roll a tiny piece of yellow fondant and glue it into the hole. Shape the leaves with your fingers.
How To Make An Apple Cupcake Topper
To make the apple cupcake topper you will need
- Small amounts of red, green and brown modelling paste.

Take a small piece of red modelling paste and roll it into a ball. Mine was slightly larger than a marble.

Use a cone tool to gently indent a hole into the top of the ball. Don’t worry if it flattens slightly as this helps to produce an apple shape.

With the ball tool still in position, gently turn the modelling paste around with your fingers, making the bottom narrower as you do so. This moulds it into the shape of an apple.

Take a small piece of green modelling paste and form it into a flat tear shape. This will be the apple’s leaf.

Use a knife modelling tool to mark veins on the leaf.

Stick the leaf into the hole on the apple. I used a little vodka to do this. Next, form a tiny piece of brown modelling paste into a cone shape. This is the apple’s stork.

Stick the stork into the hole, as can be seen above.

You can either leave your leaf laying down on the apple or shape it further. You could raise it slightly, as can be seen above.
I hope you enjoyed seeing how I made these horse themed cupcakes. Below are affiliate links to some of the items I have used. I used white modelling paste and coloured it grey, red, green, brown and orange with paste food colours. I also used the white modelling paste for the discs that the toppers were placed on. The edible paint that I used is best thinned out with some rejuvenator spirit, which also helps to clean your brushes after.
