Hi all, I was so excited when I had this love heart cupcakes idea, perfect for Valentine’s Day. The love heart cupcake toppers are really simple to make and you can add any message that you want to them, as long as it fits, of course! So, let me show you how I made them. Below you will find a written tutorial followed by a video tutorial.
Love Heart Cupcake Toppers
I coloured four lots of sugarpaste (some call it fondant) with orange, green, purple and yellow food colouring. I then added a tiny amount of PME CMC Powder to each colour. CMC powder helps to firm up the sugarpaste. Being firmer made it easier to make the toppers. When I use CMC powder I only ever use tiny amounts. As you work it in to the sugarpaste you can actually feel it changing texture and firming up.

In turn, I rolled out each colour of sugarpaste to about 5mm thick. I then cut out a circle and a heart. Once I had cut out all the shapes that I needed, I left the sugarpaste overnight to set.

Royal Icing For The Words
The next day, I made a batch of royal icing which I divided into four bowls. I then coloured the royal icing so it matched the four colours of my sugarpaste love hearts.
I used a little royal icing to stick the hearts on the circles of the same colour. Once the hearts were secure, I piped the words using a PME #2 piping tip I did this free hand, so the letters were not all exactly the same! I also piped around the outside of the heart too. If you would like to see how I make my own piping bags you can here. When you are not using your royal icing it’s a good idea to keep it covered. This prevents air getting to it so it won’t crust over.

When I’m piping words, the letter O is definitely my nemesis! A little trick I’ve learnt over the years is to use a paint brush dipped lightly in vodka to help shape and neaten the letters. It has to be done before the icing is dry and you don’t want too much vodka on your brush. I usually blot away the excess vodka on a kitchen towel before using it on the royal icing.
Painting The Love Hearts
Once the piped word had set, I then painted them red. I used my Sweet Sticks mini paint palette to do this. I absolutely love this paint palette and I can’t wait to buy more colours! The red I used for the love hearts was from the palette called Monster. You just add a drop of water to the colour you are using, wait for the paint to activate and then you are ready to paint.

Finishing Touches
I piped pink buttercream rose swirls onto each cupcake before putting the love hearts on top. If you would like to see how I pipe my rose swirls you can do so here.
